The Rubincam Youth Writing Competition was established in 1986 to honor Milton Rubincam, CG, FASG, FNGS, for his many years of service to the National Genealogical Society and to the field of genealogy. These awards encourage and recognize our youth as the next generation of family historians. The awards may be given annually to a student in either the junior category (grades 6-8) or senior category (grades 9-12) for an appropriately prepared genealogy. Up to two honorable mentions (runners-up) may also be named in each category. The awards are announced and presented at the annual NGS Banquet at the annual NGS Family History Conference. Earthwatch expeditions pair researchers with volunteers to address some of the world’s most pressing environmental challenges. Ame rican Computer Science League (A CSL)  organizes computer science and programming contests for K-12 students. The 2020-2021 school year will be our 43rd year of continuous operation. Last year, about 500 teams in the United States, Canada, Europe, and Asia participated.  ACSL offers multiple divisions, providing an appropriate challenge for students of varying ages and abilities. A Regeneron ISEF-affiliated science fair is a research-based, high school competition that is a member of Society for Science & the Public’s affiliated fair network. These competitions exist in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and more than 75 countries, regions, and territories. To affiliate, science fairs agree to follow basic guidelines for fair operations and Society rules governing student research, but are ultimately responsible for their own management. Although the pandemic has caused much of the world to come to a standstill, we believe innovation and ingenuity have not ceased to exist, especially in students who have experienced the effects of COVID-19 firsthand. As a team of four motivated high school upperclassmen, we started AstraHacks, a female-led hackathon that aims to empower high school students to design an application that targets a problem being faced by society during the COVID-19 pandemic. AstraHacks 2020 will be a nine-day event starting on August 28th with guest speakers, expert mentors, workshops, and prizes. We are hoping to provide inspiration to many students whose summer programs have been canceled and would love to have you stand in support with us.
