The Stanford Institute for Medical Research is a program that lasts 8 weeks where students live at Stanford and conduct medical research under the guidance of accomplished Stanford professors or post docs. It is mostly open to Bay Area students. The Takahe Short Story Competition is held annually by the Takahe magazine for the chance to win cash prizes and publication online in takahē 96 (August 2019). 'Smart Alex' celebrates the centenary of Alexander Turnball and his remarkable legacy; his donation of his entire collection of books became the basis for New Zealand's largest documentary heritage library, the Alexander Turnbull Library (ATL) and has enabled New Zealanders today to be smarter and more informed about their heritage in Aotearoa. The Pikihuia Awards is a biennial competition founded in 1995 to recognise and celebrate Maori writers.
