The National Speech and Debate Association, formerly the National Forensic League, is an interscholastic speech and debate organization serving the middle school, high school, and college students in the United States. The Association provides competitive speech and debate activities, resources, training, scholarship opportunities, and advanced recognition.

Competing in speech and debate especially at the high levels takes a lot of preparation. You also need a good amount of confidence to speak and debate your point in front of a lot of different people. A large number of students compete so the competition can be tough, especially at a National level.
High school membership is $149, with an option to upgrade to the all-school team Resource Package for an additional $199. Each individual student who becomes a lifetime member is $20.
Middle school membership is $75, with an option to upgrade to the all-school team Resource Package for an additional $199. Each individual student membership is $10.Traveling expenses can become costly depending on how many events teams travel to per year.
Public speaking, excellent research skills
It is up to the teacher how many competitions they want their debate team to attend. Generally, they suggest meeting once a week and then even more before a scheduled competition. There are 1000's of competitions to pick from.
