Screenshot is an online photography competition designed to support and encourage excellence in student photographic practice in the visual arts. Held each year since 2011, it offers a high-profile opportunity for students in Years 3–12 to develop their photographic skills and gain recognition for their efforts.

All winning entries are published online on the Art Gallery of New South Wales website.

Age Range




Winner, second, and highly commended awards are given out in junior, intermediate, and senior age groups. In 2018, 11 photos were given awards across all three groups.

Participation Cost


Though students may want to experiment with professional equipment, smartphone cameras take high enough quality photos to submit.

Minimum Technical Skill Needed


Though students don't need any prior technical skills, they may find it useful to look at previous years' contest winners and/or other photography exhibitions or contest winners.

Time Commitment


Time commitment will vary depending on student's interest and how long it takes them to snap the "right" picture.
