The Lion Foundation Songwriting Competition is the national flagship programme of the Play It Strange Trust. Young songwriters compete for three specific awards within the competition; the Junior Maioha (best song in Te Reo Maori), David Richwrite Lyric Award (best lyrics), and the Play It Strange PWC School Of The Year (most songs in the final list).
Entries from all over the country are listened to and judged by an experienced panel; each song is judged 50% on lyrics and 50% on music. Around 50 finalists are also chosen each year to have their songs recorded at a professional recording studio, with each recorded song mastered and included on the annual Play It Strange album. Competitors have the unique opportunity to be exposed to the professional music industry and develop as recorded young songwriters.
