Smokefree Rockquest is the only nationwide, live, original music, youth even in New Zealand. Young musicians compete in regional competitions across New Zealand to progress to the National Final. Unsigned bands and individuals perform covers and original music for the chance to win the ultimate prize packages. The overall national winner has the opportunity to record a single at York St Studios in Auckland, as well as win musical gear from NZ rockshops, a New Recording Artist grant, and a Music Video Grant funded by NZ On Air, and mentoring with a music industry professional. Other iconic awards may also be won at regional events, including the Lowdown Best Song Award, APRA Lyric Award, Smokefree People's Choice Award, and Smokefree Women's Musicianship Award.
Famous past winners and successful performers include Evermore, who have reached the heights of international success since winning the competition in 2000, and Anika Moa who has received numerous APRA and New Zealand Music Award nominations.
