The National History Challenge

The National History Challenge is a research-based competition for students. It gives students a chance to be an historian, researching world history, examining Australia’s past, investigating their community or exploring their own roots. It emphasises and rewards quality research, the use of community resources and effective presentation.

The History Teachers’ Association of Australia (HTAA), organises and runs the NHC. The HTAA aims to promote public support for a more widespread involvement in the teaching, learning and making of history. It encourages differing perspectives on the global experience, in the belief that an understanding of our diverse yet common past is a prerequisite to informed participation in Australian society.

The theme for 2019 is “People and Power”. The theme is very important and it is the theme upon which all entries must be focused. Students can, with guidance, apply the theme to a variety of contexts within their particular state or territory’s curriculum.
