The National Schools Poetry Award is supported by Creative NZ and is held annually for Year 12 and 13 students in New Zealand. Award winners receive generous cash prizes and opportunities; First Prize includes a $500 cash prize, $500 book grant for the winner's school library, invitation to the masterclass in Wellington including flights and accommodation, as well as a year's membership of the New Zealand Book Council and the New Zealand Society of Authors.
The Schools Poetry Masterclass is also held annually by esteemed New Zealand poets; including James Brown and Hera Lindsay Bird in 2018, in which participants have the prized opportunity of learning from award winning poets at Victoria University's International Institute of Modern Letters.
