The Smart Alex Creative Writing Competition is hled by the Friends of the Turnbull Library and is open to all secondary school students in New Zealand and the South Pacific. 'Smart Alex' celebrates the centenary of Alexander Turnball and his remarkable legacy; his donation of his entire collection of books became the basis for New Zealand's largest documentary heritage library, the Alexander Turnbull Library (ATL) and has enabled New Zealanders today to be smarter and more informed about their heritage in Aotearoa.
Students compete for cash prizes of up to $1,000 by producing a piece of creative writing in which they respond to, or interpret, an item in the collections of the Alexander Turnbull Library. Submissions can be prose, poetry, or a combination of text and illustrations such as a cartoon strip or graphic story.
For further information visit the official site here. The competition will return in 2020 - however, dates are yet to be announced.
