PTT Global Chemical Public Company Limited (GC) is PTT Group’s petrochemical flagship. PTTGC is Thailand’s largest petrochemical and refining company. GC is committed to strengthening their leading position in the chemicals business by combining environmentally friendly innovations with advanced technologies to develop products to improve people’s lives.

PTTGC encompasses diversified and comprehensive petrochemical businesses, including manufacturing and distribution of upstream, intermediate, and downstream petrochemical products.

The PTTGC Open Innovation Challenge 2016 was the first of its kind challenge for innovators to co-develop lab-to-market projects in Thailand's petrochemical industry. PTTGC invites participants to submit idea proposals for Smart-Eco Innovation in product or process development. The initiatives must lead to commercializable application and meanwhile it must be ecologically sustainable.

The theme of the 1st initiative is “Smart Eco-Innovation”, which comprises of three categories: Smart-Eco Products, Smart-Eco Plants, and Circular Thinking. The target group can be academia, research institutes, start-ups, SMEs, and independent inventors.

Each proposal will go through 1st screening. Up to 10 proposals will be selected for final selection. The external judges will then judge the teams according to the criteria and finally award the 3 winners, each in the three categories, with a Royal trophy and 500,000 THB cash prize for the proposal and funding for conducting research & development afterwards with PTTGC.

This challenge is all about bringing innovative ideas to co-create a sustainable future. It focuses on bringing in new ideas and technologies to accelerate towards commercialization.

In 2016 competition, there were 50 teams that competed for the most innovative proposal judged from economical value and environmentally sustainability. Up to 10 proposals will be selected for final selection.

The external judges will then judge the teams according to the criteria and finally award the 3 winners, each in the three categories. This is quite a competitive competition.
