The FIRST Robotics Competition is part of a host of programs organised by FIRST, the others being the FIRST Lego League Jr., FIRST Lego League, and the FIRST Tech Challenge. The FIRST Robotics Competition offers the unique opportunity for students to build game-playing robots over a six-week period and they are inspired to become leaders in science and technology. Over the course of the challenge, participants embrace a unique culture of "gracious professionalism" and "coopertition" for cooperating and competiting at the same time.
Students build robots to compete in a wide range of exciting game tasks such as scoring goals with balls, flying discs into goals, balancing their robots on beams, and hanging from bars. In addition to on-field game competition, teams and team members also compete for awards that reward entrepreneurship, creativity, engineering, industrial design, and other core values of the FIRST Robotics programme.
