The International Economics Olympiad (IEO) is an annual competition in economics organized for students at secondary school level. The International Economics Olympiad aims to bring together the best young minds around the world. There is an element of teamwork that makes this competition unique among the Olympiads and seeks to reflect the interpersonal nature of the subject of Economics.

IEO is held for people who must have been born less than 20 years before 30 June of the year of participation, learning or just graduated from high school. Participants are chosen by means of National competitions in each separate country and region. Chosen participants form a team, that is then sent to take part in the IEO competition.

Participation in IEO is free of charge for any individual.

Although the teaching of economics and similar subjects is very different worldwide and, the tasks of the IEO will be composed in a way that facilitates equal competition. The tasks will not be aimed primarily at testing the knowledge of theory.

The corporate structure of the IEO consist of the International Board, the Executive Board, the Chairman, the President, the Secretary, the Problem Committee, and the Steering Committee.

Students must prepare and present their work, and will be up against many other competitors.

Participation Cost


There are no participation fees for teams that are invited to the IEO including up to 5 contestants and up to 2 team leaders. This covers accommodation in the shared rooms and meals costs during the dates between Arrivals and Departures days, excursions, gifts, and prizes.

Flights + Accommodation costs: $1000-3000 (USD).

Minimum Technical Skill Needed


A high profiency in knowledge in economics.

Time Commitment


A one day event that occurs annually.

Application Process Includes

The team application process consists of two stages: State and Institutional. Applying as a team means that an applicant agrees with the Statute and Annual Regulations.

A team from a certain country may apply at the Institutional application stage regardless of the results of the State application. This application can be initiated by any legal entity from this country, including government institutions and non-governmental organizations.

Applications will be reviewed by the Executive Board according to the Statute.
