Joining your school's or a local newspaper as a writer is a great extracurricular activity for students looking to gain tangible writing experience outside of their school work. As a writer, students may have the opportunity to write about various topics such as local news, national news, sports, politics, opinion pieces, and many more. Students not only have the chance to write; they also have the chance to have a voice at their school or local community.

This can be a great opportunity for students to discover if they want to pursue a career in journalism while developing their own journalism skills by learning from more experienced journalists.

To join, get in contact with your school's or a local newspaper to ask if they have an opening for new writers. Be prepared to have writing samples ready to show.
