New Zealand Geography Olympiad

The New Zealand Geography Olympiad is a national competition where the top chemistry students in the country compete for the chance to represent New Zealand at the Annual International Geography Olympiad. This is a great opportunity for gifted and talented young geographers to test their knowledge on a national level.

Students wanting to participate must submit a response to a specific selection task posted each year. Responses will require student to use specific evidence to support their ideas and also make use of annotated diagrams and/or maps, geographic concepts and terminology to support their response. Students can choose to submit their response as a written essay, a narrated video, or a poster.

The top female and male from each region will be invited to compete in the selection camp where the top 4 students will be selected to represent New Zealand at the International Geography Olympiad.

Participation in the New Zealand Geography Olympiad helps to students develop a greater understanding of geography. It is recognized by universities in New Zealand and overseas as a sign of academic excellence.

$7 Entry fee + Travel to Selection camp

Minimum Technical Skill Needed


Students should have a strong academic background in geography in order to qualify for the selection camp in their region.

Time Commitment


~3 hours/week for selection task + 1-day selection camp
