Mu Alpha Theta is an honor society that recognises excellence in mathematics, offers scholarships, organises conventions and provides competitions. The name of Mu Alpha Theta is a Greek transliteration of the word ’math’, in keeping with the organisation’s subject of interest.
Their aim is in inspiring a keen interest in mathematics, developing strong scholarship in the subject, and promoting the enjoyment of mathematics in high school and two-year college students. Students can find and join Mu Alpha Theta chapters in schools across the country. In joining, they can meet others who are passionate about mathematics, receive the prestige of the society, and be eligible for the benefits such as scholarships, grants, awards and connections it offers. A good level of mathematics education and a B average is the minimum required to join, but local chapters may have specific requirements such as attending meetings, tutoring others, and participating in related activities.
The Mu Alpha Theta society also supports competitions such as the Log1 contest, the Rocket City Math League, and the Mathematical Minutes Video Contest. They hold an annual convention, with five days of competition and other math-related activities, as well as the chance for a school to be crowned national champions.
