The Allen & Unwin Young Designer of the Year Award recognises and encourages emerging talent. The judges seek outstanding design across a whole portfolio from designers under 35 years of age. To enter the award, designers enter a portfolio of their book design work, which is assessed on artistic merit, innovation of form, quality of production, and appropriateness to the intended market. To be eligible for this award, designers must be under 35 years of age as at 31 December of the previous year, New Zealand citizens by birth or residents for at least three years prior to 31 December of the previous year and must currently live in New Zealand.
Designers are asked to send between three and five book designs completed
between the start of January and the end of December (2019). Publishers may also send this material on the designer’s behalf. Books must be designed in New Zealand but typesetting and printing may be done
This award aims to recognise outstanding design across a whole portfolio that clearly
demonstrates the relevance of the design to each book’s target market. Judges will be assessing the ability of designers to consider the author’s work, the publisher’s marketing requirements and the audience appeal in the completed design of all the books entered. Books will be judged on artistic merit, innovation of form, quality of production values and appropriateness to the intended market.

Applications for the award are open to all New Zealand citizens up until the age of 35 years old.
There are no entry fees.
No specific technical skills are mandatory for entry, however, in order to succeed in this competition, it would be beneficial to be familiar with design, have a strong sense of vision and innovation.
The amount of time dedicated to this project is at the discretion of the participant.
Any entries must be submitted before the announced deadline (2019 dates are TBA), and must be submitted by the designer or a publisher.
