Pupils experiment is the junior division of the competition Jugend forscht. All young researchers who are not older than 14 years of age on the 31st of December of the year of registration take part here. Younger students who wish to participate must attend at least the 4th grade. For group projects, the age of the oldest participant is decisive for the classification into the respective age division. Accordingly, for example, a team consisting of 13- and 14-year-olds starts experimenting in the field of students. However, when two 12-year-olds work on a project together with a 15-year-old, they enroll in the Youth Researcher division.
Experimenting with students there is no national final. In this category, the round usually ends with the state competition, for which all regional winners qualify. An exception are the federal states of Brandenburg, Hesse, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, and Saarland. There, only regional competitions take place in the junior division.
Outstanding projects in the field of student experimentation can be upgraded by the jury of the regional competition in the exceptional case into the field of youth research. The prerequisite is that it is the best project in a specialist field across all divisions. The project is subsequently awarded the regional victory in the Youth Research Division. This is the ideal competition for you, if you are curious and active, like to research or invent and for example have an interest in animals, plants, stones, stars, substances, reactions, formulas, phenomena, landscapes, waters, weather, numbers, computers, programs, inventions, machines - in short: an avid interest in the environment.
