In 2008, a group of Vietnamese students at NUS high organized a mini-trip to visit a shelter in Vietnam, and they chose Mai Hoa shelter where there are children with HIV/AIDS. Going there, they felt a strong connection with the kids despite not knowing them much beforehand and thought that they could organize other similar trips. After a year conducting trips to shelters, in 2009, they officially founded an organization and named it Project SUGAR.
