The Korean Mathematical Olympiad has as its main goal to encourage students to use and develop their knowledge in mathematics, identify young talents, encourage teachers to improve their classes, integrate students from different schools, and promote social equality throughout knowledge. Students compete for medals with other young people in their same age group from around the nation. Those that qualify for top medals can go on and compete in regional and international competitions, representing Korea.

After online registration, applicants take a test composed of 20 questions. Selected students take the second round of test composed of 8 frq. The selected students attend the winter education session. Final KMO test is taken among who have qualified for second test or attended winter school. International round representatives are selected after two tests. For a month, potential representatives receive education. After selecting the six representative, they are given intense training and attend the international mathematical olympiad.
Each division is awarded gold, silver, bronze, participant award.

Need great amount of knowledge in mathematics to be selected as a candidate and participate in international round. It is not unusual for university level mathematics to be part of the test.
