Description

GENIUS Olympiad is an international high school project competition about environmental issues. It is founded and organized by the Terra Science and Education and hosted by the State University of New York at Oswego.

GENIUS Olympiad will host projects in five general disciplines with an environmental focus. It is divided into five categories: Science, VPA, Business, Writing, Robotics.

In 2018, there were 1,657 applicant projects among hich only 729 were advanced to finals. Each project was sent to three judges to grade the projects on a scale of 1 to 3 (3 = yes, 2 = maybe, 1 = no). They summed the scores of all three judges and accepted all projects with 7 or more total points. They also accept projects submitted directly by affiliated fairs that were authorized in advance to make a selection out of many projects in their regions/countries.(Korea also has a separate national round of the Genius Olympiad. Or the students can directly apply to international round.) In the end, we selected around 44% of the submitted projects as a finalist.

Application fee: $50 per project, Participation fee: $ 160 per attendee (this covers lodging, meals, trip to Niagara Falls, and a Maid of the Mist boat tour, does not cover travel costs)

Student either makes up a team or individually(depending on category) participate in a competition with a finished project or a performance.

GENIUS Business raises awareness of environmental values in the business world, from bringing green products and services to market to developing a social responsibility plan for any business aiming to have a positive relationship to the society and the environment in which it operates.


Genius Robotics is a student-centric competition which provides students understanding the role of engineering and research in environmental issues. Genius Robotics encourages students to discover novel solutions to known problems in the environment by requiring them to design, build, test and control their unique robots. It provides students with a lifetime experience and an opportunity to enhance their life skills such as being a team member, researching and problem-solving.


GENIUS Creative Writing uses writing to raise awareness about global environmental problems and calls the public to action on solutions.


GENIUS Science provides understanding and solutions to environmental problems using scientific knowledge. Students are expected to present a solution using scientific methods for a problem which fits in one of the following categories.


GENIUS Music heightens public concern for environmental problems and offers solutions by pulling at the auditory heartstrings through performance (as a performer). GENIUS Music allows the student artists to influence public at the level of the heart. From the time of Homer until the present day, musical creators have presented ideas to the public in new ways, reaching them in ways that no others could, and calling people to action.
