A local chapter of the International Geology Olympiad, the first stage of the Spanish Geology Olympiad is held by mid-March in each Region, and consists of theoretical-practical tests bearing on the contents of the national Earth Science curriculum for the last 3 years of high school.
The best participants within each district will go on to the National championship, which is usually held around April, and where the 4 best participants are eligible for the International Geology Olympiad, held around September.
