A number of multiple choice questions where teams have to simultaneously answer between four possible responses.
The quiz is run as a knock-out event. Teams of four grade 7 learners per school enter, with each participating school being allowed to field one team. Many schools run internal quizzes with teams of four learners competing to be the team that eventually represents their school in the inter-schools quiz.
The objective of this competition is to contribute to the improvement of awareness, interest, understanding, and insight into basic astronomy, as well as, build an appreciation of and pride in South Africa’s history of science activity and achievements, amongst others.

Annual schools engineering competition
A wide range of categories to choose from designing a classroom to building a car driven by rubber bands and a ping pong ball launcher. A school may send a team to partake in every category. Due to time constraints on that day, only one team per competition per school will be allowed.
To make learners aware of the possibilities in engineering, reaffirm the importance of good grades in Mathematics and Physical Science and ensure learners perceive engineering as an exciting and rewarding profession that is worth pursuing.

Fashion design competition
Learners must design a garment making use of used waste recyclable material such as used paper, plastic, cans and cardboard.
No bought or new material will be accepted.
Examples of unacceptable materials include new cloth, new hessian and new, unused plastic bags.
As it is a fashion show, participants must model their creations during Sasol Techno X 2019.
To encourage learners to create a fashion garment making use of used waste recyclables and so become aware of the importance of recycling, aimed at increasing environmental awareness.

A fine arts competition in three age categories with themes to be announced in due course.
Each learner must create an original 2D artwork depicting Science, Maths or Technology.
The artwork must be based on the theme ‘Dream. Explore. Become’.
The theme must be interpreted as creatively as possible.
Any medium or combination of mediums may be used.
Two winners per grade will be identified

A premier performing arts competition for individuals, small and large groups
It is an inclusive competition platform presented annually for talented youths, adjudicated by members of the Adjudicators’ Forum.
The Eisteddfod showcases top young talent but more importantly as a platform for performing arts it has a positive impact on the personal growth of all its participants, irrespective of skill level and participants develop confidence and belief in themselves.

Maths problems written in test format individually
The first round is written in March. The junior division consists of separate papers for grades 8 and 9 and the senior division of one paper for grades 10 to 12. Each paper consists of 20 questions with multiple-choice answers and learners have one hour to complete the paper. Each school is provided with the solutions. For this round, the teachers mark.
Learner’s critical thinking ability is improved and the discovery and validation of problem-solving methods are developed through the SAMO questions.
