The Stanford Institute for Medical Research is a program that lasts 8 weeks where students live at Stanford and conduct medical research under the guidance of accomplished Stanford professors or post docs. It is mostly open to Bay Area students. It also guides students in understanding how scientific research is actually performed. 50-60 students are accepted per year and there is NO COST to participate.
In fact, some students sometimes receive a stipend for participating! At the end of the program students present their research posters. From the SIMR website, here is a description of the poster project: "This is the highlight of the summer for the SIMR program where students will present a poster of their research project. Family, teachers, and Stanford community members (faculty, students, and staff) join us to view the posters and speak with the students about their research.
