The Portland State University High School Innovation Challenge allows students to be imaginative and design technological solutions to address important scientific issues that we face as a society. Students have the opportunity to drive the project themselves and work together in a creative and humanitarian spirit to tackle relevant large-scale problems. The challenge is student-driven; teams are paired with PSU student mentors to conduct fieldwork, identify a problem, and design a solution by applying the engineering design process. To showcase their work, students present their solutions at a final event before a panel of judges. This innovation challenge distinguishes itself from other STEM opportunities by highlighting the humanitarian impact of engineering, and how its application can have a profound impact on society.
